About The project

The Government of India’s ambitious “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan,” launched in 2014, envisions transforming India into a clean nation through proper solid and liquid waste management driven by active community participation. However, behavioral change—not just infrastructure—remains the cornerstone of this transformation. Deep-rooted practices of open defecation and improper waste disposal threaten public health, environmental quality, and community dignity. BBKGSS’s Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) program addresses this critical challenge by creating widespread awareness and fostering behavioral transformation among community members toward cleanliness, sanitation, and responsible waste management as fundamental life practices.

Project Interventions:

  • Multi-Channel Awareness Campaign – Deploy diverse IEC materials including hoardings, banners, flex boards, wall paintings, audio-visual aids, and interactive street plays (nukkad natak) across Shendurjanghat, Dhamangaon Rly, Ashti, and Nandgaon Khandeshwar to reach communities through multiple sensory and cultural touchpoints.
  • Open Defecation Elimination Advocacy – Sensitize community members about the health hazards, environmental degradation, and social indignity associated with open defecation practices, while promoting the adoption and sustained use of sanitary toilet facilities for all household members.
  • Waste Segregation at Source Promotion – Educate households and communities on the critical importance of segregating solid and liquid waste at the point of generation—separating biodegradable, non-biodegradable, and hazardous waste—to enable effective recycling, composting, and safe disposal systems.
  • Behavioral Change and Habit Formation – Move beyond mere information dissemination to deep behavioral transformation, helping people internalize cleanliness not as a campaign requirement but as an intrinsic habit, cultural value, and essential way of life that benefits individual health, family well-being, and community dignity.

Through this comprehensive IEC initiative, BBKGSS contributes meaningfully to the Swachh Bharat Mission by addressing the human dimension of sanitation—transforming mindsets, attitudes, and daily practices. The program creates lasting behavioral change that ensures communities not only build toilets and waste management systems but actually use them consistently, maintaining cleanliness as a collective responsibility and source of community pride for generations to come.
