Bhartiya Bahuuddeshiya Khadi and Gramodyog Shikshan SansthaHistory of the Organization
Bhartiya Bahuuddeshiya Khadi and Gramodyog Shikshan Sanstha (BBKGSS) has been a pillar of community empowerment and sustainable progress for over thirty years. Since its establishment, the organization has consistently worked to enhance the quality of life in both rural and urban areas through a wide range of development programs.
Early Journey
Foundation and Core Vision:
BBKGSS was founded with the mission to foster inclusive growth and sustainability. In its initial phase, the organization concentrated on strengthening village economies by promoting rural industries and traditional occupations, thereby encouraging self-reliance within local communities.
Growth and Diversification (Mid-1990s to 2000s)
During this transformative era, BBKGSS expanded its activities to encompass multiple dimensions of development—such as environmental restoration, education, skill training, agricultural improvement, watershed management, and public health initiatives. This period witnessed exponential growth in both the scale and scope of interventions, touching the lives of over 1,50,000 families through comprehensive rural development programs.
Watershed and Agricultural Enhancement:
The organization launched numerous projects to improve water conservation systems, enhance soil fertility, and modernize farming techniques. Through systematic watershed treatment and land development initiatives, over 1,50,000 hectares of wasteland was converted into productive agricultural land, directly transforming livelihoods for farming communities. Water conservation efforts resulted in conservation of over 7,200 TCM (Thousand Cubic Meters) of water through check dams, farm ponds, and rainwater harvesting structures. These efforts significantly benefited farmers through improved irrigation availability, enhanced crop productivity, and reduced vulnerability to drought—while contributing substantially to environmental sustainability
Progress in Recent Years (2001 to 2025)
Environmental Stewardship and Climate Initiatives:
BBKGSS has remained at the forefront of promoting sustainable environmental practices, emphasizing climate resilience and eco-conscious community actions through targeted projects and awareness drives. The organization’s plantation initiatives have resulted in over 4,50,000 plants being planted and conserved, significantly enhancing green cover, restoring biodiversity, and strengthening ecological resilience across project areas.
Health and Hygiene Promotion:
With a strong commitment to community well-being, the organization has improved sanitation and healthcare facilities, particularly in remote areas. Individual toilet facilities have been provided to over 5,50,000 people, contributing to Open Defecation Free (ODF) status and improved public health outcomes. Through the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, awareness campaigns reached over 3,00,000 people, fostering behavioral change toward sanitation and hygiene practices that have resulted in better living conditions and reduced disease prevalence.
Education and Vocational Empowerment:
Providing access to quality education and professional skill-building opportunities continues to be a priority. BBKGSS’s educational initiatives have provided quality education to over 5,000 students through infrastructure development, learning material distribution, and inclusive education programs. Vocational training centers have empowered countless young individuals with market-relevant skills, enabling them to pursue productive careers and achieve economic independence.
Recent Milestones
Strategic Collaborations:
Simultaneously, partnerships with government departments—including Rural Development, Agriculture, Tribal Welfare, and Education—have positioned BBKGSS as a trusted implementation partner for flagship schemes. Engagement with development professionals, research institutions, and fellow NGOs fosters knowledge exchange and collective advocacy, amplifying reach and multiplying impact across Maharashtra’s rural landscape.
Ongoing Programs:
BBKGSS remains actively engaged in multiple concurrent interventions demonstrating sustained commitment to holistic community development. Current education initiatives focus on upgrading school infrastructure—establishing computer labs, providing furniture and digital equipment, and creating inclusive facilities for specially-abled children. These investments create quality learning environments benefiting thousands of students across remote areas.
Water conservation and sanitation remain priority areas, with ongoing projects revitalizing percolation tanks and watershed structures to restore water retention capacity and recharge groundwater. Sanitation maintenance in educational institutions ensures functional toilets, clean drinking water, and hygiene awareness—improving student health, dignity, and attendance rates, particularly among girls.
